Hi Everyone,
Have you ever thought about moving to Mars?
It turns out Mars is only a short walk from my house (see picture above). Every time I pass by, I think about moving to Mars.
By the way, if you’re thinking about moving to the planet Mars, it turns out that you can’t make your own county (officially at least). According to Outer Space Treaty Article II (from 1967):
“Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.”
During my undergrad degree in Space Science and Oceanography (which sounded really cool to 18 year old me), a mandatory requirement was an international law class that focused on space law. It was my least favourite course ever—actually, I hated it.
I had to read piles and piles of law documents each week, most of which I found boring and confusing (my brain much prefers formulas over legalese).
To make matters worse to my scifi loving self, the professor refused to share any kind of wonder about the possibilities away from Earth. On day one he told us that leaving earth was pointless and never shifted from that stance the entire semester. I barely passed.
Despite that course, I held on to my wonder around what living in space might be—and now I write it down.
I’m thick into my edits of the sequel to Hope is the Thing With Feathers and it’s going well. The book has a date with an editor early in the new year.
What I’ve been reading — cozy stories
The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles by Malka Older is a murder mystery set on Jupiter. Everyone lives on platforms that float about the atmosphere, and the best part it, the platforms are connected by trains (I have a thing for trains). It’s not an action book, instead the heros take time to curl up and have tea as they figure out who did it.
The Cybernetic Tea Shop by Meredith Katz is a novella about a robot who runs a tea shop. It’s a charming book and I would go to her tea shop.
Finally, I’m in a two day free book promotion. Head here to stock up.
Cheers,
Jeannette
