August 2021 - my book shop is now up! (and a coupon to celebrate)
Hello Everyone,
Happy mid-summer!
My day job has been rather chaotic lately, but usually that means there is cool stuff going on. I’m an oceanographer and from time-to-time we work with ROVs (remotely operated vehicles). When this newsletter hits your inbox, we might be diving in the deep ocean, which can be really amazing to watch. You can check it out here.
Cool works stuff typically comes with odd hours which always wrecks my sleep schedule (I’m a bit of an insomniac), the result is, I don’t get much writing done. But, when this comes out, I’ll be on holidays. We’ve booked a campsite on a lovely, sandy beach where it may (or may not) be warm enough to swim.
In other news, I carved out my own corner of the internet for a bookshop (currently just ebooks) - to celebrate I’m offering 50% off any purchases until 10 August 2022. Head here and use this coupon code: OYY4267LTT
A Book Jackpot
I had a milestone birthday recently, and to celebrate we went to a near by small town known for it’s awesome used books stores. But it was in a thrift shop that I found the jackpot - the first five books of the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. I’ve been eyeing this series up for years!
I also uncovered Velocity Weapon by Megan E. O’Keefe and Inversions by Iain M. Banks (I’m still trying hard to like his stuff). Finally, I found The Sands of Mars by Arthur C. Clarke—the back starts with:
When a celebrated science fiction writer takes to space on his first trip to Mars, he’s sure to be in for some heckling from the spaceship’s crew…
I couldn’t resist. This one is coming to the beach with me.
Other Things…
Here’s where I sheepishly admit that I’m loving watching The Orville—sheepishly because I avoided the show for years because I thought it would be a cheap knock off Star Trek. In many ways it is, but the show is more than that. It has laugh-out-loud funny moments and ridiculous scenarios that are highly enjoyable. Best of all, it has the kind of crew interactions I enjoy the most.
What are you enjoying right now? Any books or shows worth recommending?
Cheers,
Jeannette
P.S. if you are like me, don’t forget to put on sunscreen!
If you are looking for something to read on a sunny day at the beach, here are some great options:
Slap and Tristan are not only caught in the middle of this war, but old enemies still dog Tristan's trail, plotting his demise along with crooked cops, space pirates, and local thugs.
As if that’s not enough trouble, a gorgeous, gun-toting old friend arrives, and she causes distraction at the worst possible time.
Can Slap and Tristan navigate all the danger and succeed in their mission to stop the Confeds?
You'll love this edge-of-your-seat space opera adventure!
